When making up a bed to be a real centerpiece of a bedroom and not just a place to go to sleep, there are a lot of different pieces that come together to complete the effect. There are several different kinds of pillows and pillow covers that you can use as well as several different kinds of bed covers.

There are three different types of pillows that are commonly used. The European pillow is large and square. It usually goes back against the headboard. A sleeping pillow is large and rectangular. It's to be used for sleeping as the name suggests. When making up a bed, the sleeping pillows go in front of the European pillows. Decorative pillows go in front of the sleeping pillows. They can be any size or shape but are usually smaller than the European and sleeping pillows. You can also use a bolster which is a long, tubular pillow that's used as a decorative accent.

Pillows covers come in two varieties. They are either shams or cases. A sham has a flange which is a decorative ruffle around the edge. A case does not have a flange and is usually open on one end.

When it comes to bed covers, there are five different types. A coverlet is made of thin fabric and does not drape all the way to the floor. A bedspread, on the other hand, does drape all the way to the floor. A comforter is thick and down filled. A duvet cover is like a comforter without the filling. It is basically a large fabric envelope that goes over a comforter. A duvet cover can be removed easily to be washed or changed. You may also use a blanket or throw over the end of the bed or over one corner as an accent.
